| Old Teddy Bears are a little like eating a chocolate biscuit, you can never stop at just one. As soon as you take home your first Old Teddy Bear you will realise just how unique and wonderful he is and you won’t be able to wait to find your next Old Bear, then starts your collection.
So many of these beautiful Old Bears have such a history to them, although exactly what that history is, is very often forgotten or lost in the ravages of time. However, you can certainly still ‘feel’ his history especially when he is close to you. So many of these beautiful Old Teddy Bears are rather battered and bald, but what does that matter, after all, if he didn’t have any adventures (which gives him his history) he wouldn’t look like this.
Teddy Bears first arrived on our planet as long ago as 1902 and since their creation, hundreds of Soft Toy Companies around the world have made their own version of the Teddy Bear. Of course, one of the most famous of these Teddy Bear makers has to be the very famous German Company of Steiff. When a Steiff Teddy Bear grows old, he takes on so much character that there can be no-one on this earth who would not and could not fall head-over-heels in love with him. There are, however, lots of other German Teddy Bear makers, both from the past and some who are still trading. Some famous German Teddy Bear makers from the past are Schuco, Hermann and Bing, to name but a few.
In England too there were lots of famous Teddy Bear makers such as Deans and Merrythought, who fortunately still make Teddy Bears to this day. The Dean’s Rag Book Company (now commonly called just Dean’s) being the oldest surviving Teddy Bear manufacturers in England. Merrythought being a very famous company, who export their Teddy Bears all over the world. One of their most famous designs being the ‘Cheeky Bear’, a rather unique character.
Sometimes, identifying the makers of an Old Bear can be quite difficult as, when a Teddy Bear grows old he takes on his own looks and character. Most companies, however, attach their label to their Teddy Bears, either as a sew on label, a swing tag or in the case of Steiff a button in the old bear’s ear. These labels help Teddy Bear Collectors like you and I identify our elderly bears.
